Leo Records releases pipa album with Yang Jing

One of the more striking recent developments in improvised music has been the entry of several musicians trained in Chinese traditional music. Yang Jing, for example, spent twelve years in China’s National Orchestra of Traditional Music, but since settling in Switzerland, this pipa player has collaborated more and more frequently with Western improvisers. She has now recorded a series of duets with the Irish émigré guitarist Christy Doran. The results are stunning, perhaps because Doran is as inspired by electric blues as jazz and free improvisation and there’s a special affinity based on pentatonic scales. The rhythmic force and string bends that Yang Jing brings to her Salü Abend can suggest roots in the Mississippi Delta, while Doran infers multiple musical languages in the shifting tracery that he applies to Yang’s melody on Birnenblüten. The results are so lyrical that one might forget there’s anything the least bit unusual or strange about the collaboration or the spatial and temporal distances that usually separate the instruments. —Stuart Broomer |

[tbb] Yang Jing spielt in China auf grossen Konzertbühnen. In der Schweiz experimentiert sie mit Jazz und zeitgenössischer Musik. Ihr Spiel auf Pipa und Guqin vereint Kraft, Virtuosität, Poesie und Vielfalt im Ausdruck. Auf «Step in to the Future», der CD ihrer Schweizer Gruppe 4tet – Different Song, lässt sie uns jetzt an ihren neuesten Experimenten teilhaben. Sie spielt variantenreiche rhythmische Passagen mit Norbert Pfammatter (Schlagzeug), interagiert verspielt in temperierten und untemperierten Tönen mit Michel Wintsch (Piano) und sucht mit Bänz Oester (Bass) nach Phrasierungen zwischen Jazz und chinesischer Musik. «Ich finde in der Schweiz die Zeit, mich selber zu hören», erzählt Jing im Gespräch: «Ich bin der Natur so nahe – hier in meinem Haus in Aarburg. Im alten China galt das als höchstes Ziel überhaupt: In Einklang zu leben mit der Natur. Ich finde in der Schweiz die nötige Ruhe und Distanz zu meinem Schaffen. Ich kann nachdenken: Was tue ich eigentlich? Und was ist wirklich wichtig?“ Auf ihrer CD trumpfen Yang Jing und ihre Mitmusiker mit spannenden Kompositionen auf (z.B. «Noire meg» oder «Water Lily»), offerieren vielfältige Klang- und Geräuschstrukturen und gehen immer wieder unerwartete Wege. 4TET - DIFFERENT SONG / Step in to the Future (Leo Records)
Ce quatuor consiste en trois jazzmen/improvisateurs suisses (Michel Wintsch au piano, le bassiste Bänz Oester et le batteur Norbert Pfammatter) entourant la joueuse de pipa/guqin Yang Jing. Step in to the Future est leur premier disque, mais ils travaillent ensemble depuis un bon moment. Tous les membres du groupe (sauf le batteur) contribuent des compositions, qui consistent en splendides mélanges de traditions, de périodes et d’approches – de “Café longtemps d’Oester, où le jazz français se mélange au pipa, jusqu’à “Water Lily” de Jing, dominée par un motif de piano à doubles croches rappellant le minimalisme américain. On trouve aussi quelques improvisations libres. Du jazz entre deux mondes, bien écrit, original, inusité et surtout très délicat dans l’ensemble.
This quartet consists of Swiss improvising jazzmen Michel Wintsch (piano), Bänz Oester (doublebass) and Norbert Pfammatter (drums) surrounding Chinese pipa/guqin player Yang Jing. Step in to the Future is their first release, but they have been working together for a while. All band members save Pfammatter contribute compositions, which consist of beautiful blends of traditions, eras and approaches – from Oester’s French jazz-inflected “Café longtemps” being subdued to the pipa, to Jing’s “Water Lily” featuring a continuous 16th-note piano motif evoking American minimalism. There are also group free improvisations. In-between jazz, well written, original, unusual, and overall very delicate. Auf leisen Sohlen und in Samt und Seide
"... Hier aber kommen sie auf leisen Sohlen und in Samt und Seide. Die Vermutung, dass mit Jings Gezupfe auf Pipa und Guquin Alles 'chinesisch' anmutet, trifft zwar zu. Nur dass in China nichts auch nur annähernd so klingen könnte. Auch schlägt schon 'Farewell To An Old Friend' einen elegischen Ton an, der die Sonne untergehen lässt im Wilden Westen. Die namensgebende 'Suite' in fünf Teilen findet in einem weltoffenen Nichttraditionalismus zueinander, das nach einem chinesischen Akzent im vierten Teil weitermacht mit exotischen und geräuschhaften Neuerfindungen im Dialog. Oester lässt bei 'Café longtemps' eine Suzie Wong in Noir-Tristesse dahin schlendern. Wintsch erfand für die Pipa den schnellen Treppauf-Treppab-Sprint 'Les mots lisses', und integriert sie paritätisch in 'Noire meg', das bei ähnlichem Duktus deutlich nachdenklicher seine Chancen ausrechnet. Nachdem Jing bei 'QinXü Street No.48' noch einmal in Kindheitserinnerungen eingetaucht ist und erst Oester, dann Wintsch mit ihrer zarten, wehmütigen Lyrik angesteckt hat, löst sie zuletzt bei 'Water Lily' die Wintsch-Treppen von 'Les mots lisses' mit Pipatrillern in ein impressionistisches Spiel von Licht auf Wasser auf."
